American famous Saxophonist, Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, better known by his stage name Kenny G, amazed the crowds at Balai Sarbini Jakarta in the concert titled The Maestro is Back, November 16, 2011. That was not the first Kenny’s concert in Indonesia, but this time he also made shows at Makassar and Balikpapan. The Jakarta’s show was opened by Mike Mohede and Tompi. Both of them brought four songs and those are more than enough to entertain and warm up the fans before they watched their idol.
The concert began with Loving You and Silhouette, Kenny appeared to the crowd with a unusual way, He walked down from the upper tribune down to the stage, stayed for a while in the middle of the crowds to create a kind of intimate atmosphere. It surprised the audience and caused a little bit chaos because they wanted to get closer to the saxophonist. In the break session he tried to impress them by speaking some words in Indonesian language, such as “Terimakasih”, “Selamat Datang”, “saya sangat senang sekali”. The crowds looked exited to see this, and then he looked relieved as he returned to speak English.
Kenny G. also performed few tracks from his old album including Havana and one of his hits maker, Going Home. In this concert Kenny was accompanied by a pianist, Robert Templer. He also gave the audience latin touchs when performed tracks such asDesafinado, Sabor a Mi and Sax o’ Loco. In the middle of the show, Kenny demonstrated how to play the saxophone while keeping his breath. This technique is called circular breathing technique. It is a familiar technique among the wind and brass section musicians. He claimed that with the technique he can even blow the instrument constantly for an hour. He made his noose close to the microphone so the audience can hear his breath.
His gentle, humorous, and friendly manner during the show on stage keeps attendees more than interested throughout, Kenny also showed his generous side by giving one of his own saxophone to one lucky audience who won the draw, the winner is a woman who came with her couple. Kenny asked her to come up to the stage and performed a special song right in front of her before he gave the saxophone to her.
In the last session of the show, Kenny performed a video of Louis Armstrong, What a Wonderful World and overdubbed that song with his saxophone as he did in his 1999 video clip. The show closed with a solo saxophone performance and a track calledSongbird. Once the show is over, Kenny then walked down to the concert Hall’s Lobby where CD signing session would be held by Promoter, Lian Mipro, The fans lined up in a long queue and bought the CDs that to be signed by Kenny/ (Allex Aromatica)
